Coaxial Cable Connectors

A coaxial cable connector is a fundamental electronic component that can be found in a number of everyday devices. Coaxial cables are used to carry high frequency signals via a conducting wire that is surrounded by an insulating layer and a plastic covering. They can enable the quick transmission of signals with minimal loss and are typically used in cell phones, televisions, satellite dishes, and internet routers.

RS has coaxial and radio frequency (RF) connectors in stock and ready to ship the same day. We’re an authorized distributor for a wide range of coaxial connectors, including RF connectors, SMA connectors, and coax adapters.

We also have in-series RF adapters, between-series RF adapters, RF contacts, RF connector kits as well as RF connector hardware and accessories from leading manufacturers, including our own brand RS PRO, Pomona, L-com, TE Connectivity, Amphenol RF, Amphenol Connex, and Mueller Electric. Read on for more information on coaxial cable connectors, how they work, the different types, and what they are used for.

What are coaxial cable connectors?

A coaxial connector is used to connect two or more coaxial cables, thus completing the electrical circuit. As well as linking cables, they can be used to make the connection between devices and external power supplies. There are many different types of coaxial cable connectors and they come in many different sizes in order to suit cables of varying dimensions. These include BNC connectors, F connectors, SMA connectors, and 7/16 DIN connectors. You can find more details on these products further down this page.

How do coaxial connectors work?

Coaxial cable connectors can essentially be separated into two fundamental categories: male and female. Male connectors feature a central metal pin while female connectors have a socket that receives that pin and completes the connection, which can be made between two cables or between a device and a power supply.

Coaxial cables are designed to transmit RF signals in a wide range of applications and the connectors need to be able to withstand varying amounts of pressure, vibration, and temperature. The cables and threads are often delicate and can become damaged if not properly protected, which is why the coaxial connectors have a crucial role to play.

What are coaxial cable connectors used for?

Coaxial cables and their connectors can be found in a wide range of electronic devices. These include:

  • Televisions
  • Telephones
  • Cell phones
  • Internet routers
  • Antennas
  • Satellites
  • Radios
  • Broadcasting equipment
  • GPS systems
  • Automobiles
  • Walkie talkies
  • Military equipment
  • Air traffic control equipment

What are the different coax connector types?

There are dozens of coaxial cable connector types, all featuring different specifications and suited to a wide variety of applications. Here’s an overview of some of the various coaxial connectors and their uses:

  • Bayonet Neill-Concelman (BNC) connectors are used for rapid connection and disconnection. They are frequently found in radios and televisions and take their name from inventors Paul Neill and Carl Concelman.
  • F connectors are commonly found in televisions, where they carry the electrical signal to the set. They are also sometimes known as F-type connectors.
  • 7/16 DIN connectors are durable and are often used to join coaxial cables in situations where they may be exposed to water, such as with outdoor broadcasting equipment. DIN stands for Deutsches Institut für Normung (German Standardization Institute).
  • SubMiniature Version A (SMA) connectors are similar to F connectors, although there is approximately a 2mm difference in the size of the threads. SMA connectors are typically used in microwaves, radios, and Wi-Fi antennas.
  • N connectors are also named after inventor Paul Neill. They are waterproof, medium-size coax adapters and are commonly found in radio equipment.
